Century Wings 172 A-7D Corsair II USAF 23rd TFW, 75th TFS Tiger Sharks
Century Wings 1:72 Wings of Heroes 001632 Vought A-7D Corsair II Diecast Model USAF 23rd TFW, 75th TFS Tiger Sharks, #72-0218, England AFB, LA, 1981. Limited Edition 1000 Pieces Worldwide. Vought A-7D Corsair II. The 75th Fighter Squadron was one of the original squadrons in the 23rd Fighter Group when it took over operations of the 1st American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) in China during World War II. Following World War II, the 75th was activated at various times and locations throughout the world. In July 1972, the 75th rejoined its sister squadrons for the first time since 1949 when the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing was activated at England Air Force Base LA. The 75th began operations flying the A-7 Corsair II in 1972 taking part in a variety of operational exercises both in the United States and overseas, including tactical bombing competitions against the Royal Air Force at RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland, during October 1977 and July 1978. The squadron eventually transitioned into the A-10 Thunderbolt II in the summer of 1981. Designed as a longer-range, higher-payload replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk, the A-7 Corsair II was first flown on September 27th, 1965. This aircraft entered service during the Vietnam war and later became one of only a few US Navy aircraft to serve with the US Air Force. It possessed cutting edge technologies; it was one of the first aircraft to use a turbofan engine, an internal navigation system and a “head-up” display. Late in its career, A-7s were used for pilot training and were parked outside of hangars in order to draw the attention of Soviet spy satellites away from the fledgling F-117. Century Wings’ 1:72 scale A-7 series includes the Navy A-7E and the Air Force A-7D. The most notable features of this model are its large and cavernous chin scoop and engine exhaust detail at the rear. The canopy is hinged and locks against the tinted bulletproof windscreen, and a pair of a non-breakable rubberized pitot tubes are installed just below. The cockpit interior is packed with more instrumentation and switch detail than just about any other model in 1:72 scale. A complete set of ordnance mounts to the keyed wing pylons and snaps in place for easy reconfiguration. The solid metal horizontal stabilizers are movable and rotate in unison. Century Wings 1:72 Wings of Heroes. The Century Wings “1:72 Wings of Heroes” range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft. Century Wings 1:72 diecast airplanes feature. Diecast metal construction with some plastic components. Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details. Interchangeable extended/retracted landing gear. Presentation stand to display the aircraft “in flight”. Detailed removable pilot and crew figures. Authentic detachable ordnance loads complete with placards. Accurately detailed underside with concealed screwheads. Many limited editions with numbered certificate of authenticity. Century Wings 172 SR-71A Blackbird USAF 9th RW Det. 2 #61-7971
Century Wings 1:72 Wings of Heroes 001634 Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird Diecast Model USAF 9th RW Det. 2, #61-7971, Edwards AFB, CA, 1997. Limited Edition 800 Pieces Worldwide. Aircraft #61-7971 rolled off the assembly line on August 16th, 1965 and first flew on November 17th, 1966. As with all SR-71s, #971 was assigned to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing based at Beale AFB, CA. In 1990, the SR-71 program was officially cancelled and the majority of airframes were prepared for a life as static display pieces in museums around the United States. #971 was one of three Blackbirds to be spared however, and was delivered to NASA for high-speed/high-altitude flight testing. The USAF markings we replaced with NASA markings and the aircraft was assigned NASA serial #832. Fate intervened once more in 1995 when the USAF was tasked with resuming SR-71 operations with the three flightworthy airframes that had been loaned to NASA. #61-7971 was the first SR-71 to be reactivated and the NASA markings were once again replaced with muted USAF markings. The SR-71s were operated by Detachment 2 of the 9th RW out of Edwards AFB but the they were still assigned the red “BB” (Beale Bandits) tailcode with four iron crosses of their home base at Beale. Sadly, the reactivation was short lived and the three remaining SR-71s were permanently retired. #971 flew for the final time on September 30th 1997 and ended her career with a total of 3512.5 flight hours. This aircraft is currently on display at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, still wearing the Beale Bandits tail markings. Designed as a long-range, strategic reconnaissance aircraft, The Lockheed SR-71 first flew on December 22, 1964. Nicknamed “The Blackbird, ” this highly-advanced aircraft was believed by many to be ahead of its time. It was capable of mach 3 and still holds the record for the fastest “air breathing manned aircraft” in the world. Its speed and ability to operate at high altitudes served as a defensive feature; when attacked by surface-to-air missiles, the pilot needed only to accelerate to avoid being struck. Only 32 SR-71’s were operated during its 34-year service history, and though 12 were destroyed in accidents none were lost to enemy attack. Century Wings’ 1:72 scale SR-71 includes the mission-capable SR-71A and training SR-71B variants. The models are constructed almost entirely of metal with only the smallest amount of plastic used in the manufacturing process. Crisply detailed panel lines and ultra-thin metal rudders and edges surround the airframe to reproduce this eye-catching speed demon. The sharply pointed shock cones protruding from the engine nacelles and the afterburner detail at the rear of the engine are accurately reproduced, and the correctly detailed set of landing gear and doors have been included as robust sub-assemblies that allow for quick and easy configuration for ground or in-flight display.
