US Army Air Force USAAF Sextant (A10 Type) in Handsome Wooden Carrying Case. This A10 Sextant is packaged in a handsome dove tailed rugged wooden carrying case. Interior parts are shown in the photos. The year of manufacture is possibly coded as 1944 on the nameplate. Condition is very good for parts in the carrying case. No mold or excessive wear. World War II (WWII) Air Forces U. Army field equipment SEXTANT Model A-10A made by ANSCO. Marked both on the case cover and on the sextant almost identical info. : Property, Air Forces US Army SEXTANT A-10A AF 44- 5584 (type) serial no. W-30-053ac-1136 27473 order no. MFRS ASSEM DWG No F-245 MF’RD BY ANSCO A division of Gerneral Analine & Film Corp. Binghamton, NY The characters before the serial no. 5584 “AF 44″, may refer to Air Forces 1944 Untested but looks in pretty good condition. Not sure if is complete but from a search on other similar items online, they all seem to have the same parts in the case and similar empty space in the case. The rubber on the separate eyepiece (see pictures) seems to be hardened. Wood case is in excellent vintage condition. Closes tight, clasps work well, wood seems worn but is good quality wood and in pretty good condition. Box size: 9 x 9 x 5.5 This is a unique opportunity to own such a WWII era sextant made by Ansco (rare ; more common is Fairchild), in such a condition. A sextant is an instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects. Its primary use is to determine the angle between a celestial object and the horizon which is known as the altitude. Making this measurement is known as sighting the object, shooting the object, or taking a sight. The angle, and the time when it was measured, can be used to calculate a position line on a nautical or aeronautical chart. A common use of the sextant is to sight the sun at noon to find one’s latitude. Since the sextant can be used to measure the angle between any two objects, it can be held horizontally to measure the angle between any two landmarks which will allow for calculation of a position on a chart. A sextant can also be used to measure the Lunar distance between the moon and another celestial object e. Star, planet in order to determine Greenwich time. The item “Vintage U. S.
