Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA5417 Northrop AT-38B Talon Diecast Model USAF 479th TTW, 435th TTFS, #63-8172, Holloman AFB, NM, 1980s. The AT-38B Talon is a supersonic advanced trainer used by the US Air Force as part of its Lead In Fighter Training, or LIFT, program. Derived from the T-38A, the AT-38B was modified for tactical instruction with a strengthened wing, underwing pylons, and a gunsight system. It allowed student pilots to practice air to ground attack, air combat maneuvering, and formation tactics at high speed before transitioning to frontline fighters such as the F-4, F-15, and F-16. The AT-38B played a key role in bridging basic jet training and operational fighter aircraft. Designed as a supersonic jet trainer to replace the T-33, the T-38 was based on the F-5 Freedom Fighter airframe and was first flown on March 10th, 1959. The 9th Reconnaissance Wing (9 RW) is a United States Air Force unit assigned to the Air Combat Command and Sixteenth Air Force. It is stationed at Beale Air Force Base, California. The wing is also the host unit at Beale. Its mission is to organize, train and equip the Air Force’s fleet of U-2R Dragon Lady, RQ-4 Global Hawk aircraft for peacetime intelligence gathering, contingency operations, conventional war fighting and Emergency War Order support. Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA5410 Northrop T-38A Talon Diecast Model USAF, #65-10363, Air Force Plant 42, CA, 1984, Blackbird Chase Aircraft. Plant 42 is owned by the United States Air Force and shares a runway with Palmdale Regional Airport in California. It is operated as a component of Edwards Air Force Base, which is 23 miles to the northeast. Lockheed’s famed “Skunk Works” (a corporate division tasked with clandestine development of black projects), is at Site 10 of the complex. During the 1980s it was used by Lockheed to produce the U-2/TR-1 and support the SR-71. T-38A #65-10363 was on hand to serve a trainer for SR-71 crew members as well as to act as a chase plane for SR-71 flight test operations.
