C-130 Hurricane Hunter painting “The Eye of the Storm”. Fantastic painting of a Hurricane Hunter in the eye of a hurricane. Painted and signed by Leo in 1985. Measures approx 24 1/4 wide and 18 1/4 tall as from edge to edge. Condition – The name Williams is written in permanent ink on the back of the frame. Two small brown marks on the left side as shown. The bottom right corner has a small dent in the wood frame behind the canvas as shown on the edge. A small mark under the sun as shown. One side has some corrosion to the staples on the side of the frame as shown. The frame is really light weight wood and not exactly square on the edges. In 1973, the 815th (Flying Jennies) were reactivated as part of the Air Force Reserve, flying C-130s at Keesler AFB, Miss. Under control of the 920th Tactical Airlift Group (Reserve). 1, 1976 the unit was re-designated as the 815th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron when its parent, the 920th, was re-designated a weather reconnaissance group. For the next 12 years, the 815th WRS tracked storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic, Caribbean Basin, Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Pacific. In 1983, the 920th WRG was deactivated, and the 815th WRS came under the direct operational control of the 403rd Rescue and Weather Reconnaissance Wing, which moved its headquarters to Keesler. The current Hurricane Hunters are still at Keesler, still taming the skies and still gathering life saving information every year.
