Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA2851 Northrop YF-23 Black Widow II Diecast Model USAF, #87-0800 PAV-1 / Gray Ghost, Edwards AFB, CA, 1990. Northrop YF-23 Black Widow II. The Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23 is an American single-seat, twin-engine, supersonic stealth fighter aircraft technology demonstrator designed for the United States Air Force (USAF). The design team was a finalist in the USAF’s Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) demonstration/validation competition, battling the YF-22 team for full-scale development and production. Two YF-23 prototypes were built. The first aircraft, #87-0800, was designated Prototype Air Vehicle 1 (PAV-1) and made its first flight on 27 August, 1990 using the callsign “Gray Ghost”. This aircraft is currently on display at the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, Ohio. Designed to meet a US Air Force requirement for an Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) to replace the F-15 Eagle, the YF-23 demonstrator was first flown on August 27th, 1990. The USAF’s ATF program aimed to produce a fifth-generation air superiority fighter that would be better matched against emerging new aircraft such as the Su-27 Flanker. After a four-year development and evaluation process, the YF-22 team was selected in favor of the YF-23 in 1991. Although the YF-23 was stealthier and faster, it was less agile than its competitor. Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA5415 Northrop T-38C Talon Diecast Model USAF Thunderbirds, #1, 1970s. In 1974, the U. Air Force Thunderbirds transitioned to the T-38 Talon for their aerobatic performances, marking a new era in the team’s history. The change from the larger F-4 Phantom II to the lightweight, supersonic T-38 allowed for more precise maneuvers and lower operating costs. The T-38’s sleek profile and agility made it ideal for the Thunderbirds’ tight formations and complex routines. The T-38 served the team until 1982, when it was replaced by the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Designed as a supersonic jet trainer to replace the T-33, the T-38 was based on the F-5 Freedom Fighter airframe and was first flown on March 10th, 1959. The pressurized tandem-seat cockpit offers excellent visibility for both student and instructor and provides a comfortable training environment. Being both lightweight and nimble, the T-38 is used extensively to prepare military pilots for high performance jet aircraft and has earned the nickname “White Rocket”. The T-38 was famously flown by the USAF Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron during the 1970s and proved popular with NASA who use it as an astronaut trainer and chase-plane. Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA2828 Lockheed F-22A Raptor Diecast Model USAF 422nd TES, #04-4070 Symbiote, Nellis AFB, NV, November 2021, Mirror Paint Finish. F-22A 04-4070 is the second of two aircraft belonging to the 422 Test and Evaluation Squadron (TES) that have been seen wearing a special mirror-like finish. The first sighting of 04-4070 took place on March 17, 2022 at Nellis AFB. As to the purpose of this new covering, there is only speculation at this point. Designed to meet a US Air Force requirement for an Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) to replace the F-15 Eagle, the F-22 was first flown on September 29th, 1990. The USAF’s ATF program aimed to produce a fifth-generation air superiority fighter that would be better matched against emerging new aircraft such as the Su-27 Flanker. The F-22 uses stealth technology and can function in air superiority, ground attack, intelligence and electronic warfare roles. Despite its capabilities, the F-22 program was relatively short-lived; by 2010 its high cost coupled with the development of the F-35 (a more versatile and less expensive aircraft) led to a cessation of F-22 production funding. Hobby Master’s 1:72 scale F-22 Raptor is constructed almost entirely in diecast metal with near-seamless construction. The cockpit has an articulating hinged smoke-colored canopy that closes with almost no visible gap and opens to reveal a detailed interior with side-mounted fly-by-wire joystick, throttle controls, ejection seat and pad-printed digital display screens. The stabilators are movable, and the under-wing mounted fuel tanks are removable. The landing gear are constructed as complete subassemblies for quick configuration, and a full complement of configurable ordnance exposes structural details when configured in the deployed position. In addition to their responsibilities as the official US Air Force aerial demonstration team, the Thunderbirds are part of the combat force. If required, the team’s personnel and aircraft can be rapidly integrated into a fighter unit at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Since the aircraft are only slightly modified, they can be made combat-ready in less than 72 hours. In 1988, the Thunderbirds were asked to demonstrate this capability with one of their aircraft. Maintenance crews rose to the challenge and transformed aircraft #10 in the allotted time. The finished result was quite unique. The aircraft retained its colorful red, white and blue paint scheme but was fully combat ready with 20mm cannon, bombs, missiles and ECM pod. Major BJ Java test flew the jet, fired the cannon and dropped bombs before returning to the base with a huge smile. After its historic flight, somebody wrote the word’Warbird’ with their finger in the soot that clung to the fuselage in front of the gun barrel. The name caught on and was later painted on the side of the engine intake. Designed by General Dynamics as a lightweight, daytime USAF air-combat fighter, the F-16 was first flown on January 20th, 1974. This single-engine, supersonic aircraft has, over the years, evolved into a multirole aircraft. It has a frameless bubble canopy-giving its pilot superior visibility-and it uses advanced aerodynamics. The F-16 was one of the first designs to use a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire system, which helps it pull 9-g maneuvers and achieve speeds of more than Mach 2. Called’Viper’ by its pilots, the F-16 is considered one of the most successful aircraft designs of the Cold War, with 4,400+ aircraft built since 1976.

Fighter pilot is an attitude. It is a streak of rebelliousness, and it is competitiveness. But there’s something else – there’s a spark. There’s a desire to be good. To do well; in the eyes of your peers, and in your own mind. Robin Olds, Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs Of Legendary Ace Robin Olds. Using the reinforced air frame of the F-101C, the RF-101C first flew on July 12th, 1957, entering service in 1958. Like the RF-101A, the RF-101C had up to six cameras in place of radar and cannons in the reshaped nose and retained the bombing ability of the fighter-bomber versions. 166 RF-101Cs were built, including 96 originally scheduled to be F-101C fighter-bombers. On November 27th, 1957, during Operation Sun Run, an RF-101C piloted by then-Captain Robert Sweet set the Los Angeles-New York City-Los Angeles record in 6 hours 46 minutes, and New York to Los Angeles record in 3 hours, 36 minutes. Another RF-101C, piloted by then-Lieutenant Gustav Klatt, set a Los Angeles to New York record of three hours 7 minutes. The 1964 Project “Toy Tiger” fitted some RF-101C with a new camera package and a center line pod for photo-flash cartridges. Some were further upgraded under the Mod 1181 program with automatic control for the cameras. The RF-101C saw service during the Cuban Missile Crisis and soon followed the North American F-100 Super Sabres in October 1961, into combat when RF-101s from the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing deployed to Vietnam. The RF-101C was deployed operationally during the Vietnam War, sustaining losses with the first F-101 being lost in November 1964 to ground fire. From 1965 through November 1970, its role was gradually taken over by the RF-4C Phantom II. In some 35,000 sorties, 39 aircraft were lost, 33 in combat, including five to SAMs, one to an airfield attack, and one in air combat to a MiG-21 in September 1967. The RF-101C’s speed made it largely immune to MiG interception. 27 of the combat losses occurred on reconnaissance missions over North Vietnam. In April 1967, ALQ-71 ECM pods were fitted to provide some protection against SAMs. Although the Voodoo was again able to operate at medium altitudes, the added drag and weight decreased the speed enough to make RF-101 vulnerable to the maneuverable (and cannon-equipped) MiGs and thus requiring fighter escort. After withdrawal from Vietnam, the RF-101C continued to serve with USAF units through 1979. In service, the RF-101C was nicknamed the “Long Bird”; it was the only version of the Voodoo to see combat. Pictured here is a 1:72 scale diecast replica of a USAF McDonnell RF-101C Voodoo reconnaissance aircraft that was nicknamed “Gerry’s Klown”, and attached to the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron “Polka Dots”, then deployed to Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, during 1969. Dimensions: Wingspan: 7-inches Length: 10-1/2-inches. Features: – Diecast construction with some plastic parts – Accurate markings and insignia – Full complement of weapons – Interchangeable landing gear – Opening canopy – Comes with two seated pilot figures – Comes with display stand. Historical Account: “Polka Dots” – In August 1958, the squadron’s subsonic Thunderjets were replaced by the supersonic McDonnell RF-101C Voodoo, the first supersonic tactical reconnaissance aircraft in the USAF inventory. In the early 1960s, the United States began to become more and more involved in the ongoing conflict in Vietnam. A detachment of the squadron was sent from Japan to Don Muang Royal Thai Air Force Base, co-located with Bangkok’s international airport, in Thailand, to fly high-speed reconnaissance missions over South Vietnam. In December 1962, another detachment was deployed to Tan Son Nhut Air Base, near Saigon, South Vietnam. Its mission was to fly intelligence gathering flights. Squadron aircraft and personnel began rotational temporary duty to Tan Son Nhut, which continued until November 1965. The unit was re-designated the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron on January 1st, 1967. The usefulness of the RF-101 to the war effort was, in large part, the reason for the aircraft to remain in the inventory throughout the 1960s. Upon its return to Misawa, the squadron’s aircraft, now relatively war-weary from nearly a decade of flying combat missions, were retired and the squadron became non-operational. It was inactivated on May 31st, 1971.

The F-117 was the only airplane that the planners dared risk over downtown Baghdad. The United States Air Force. The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is a retired American single-seat, twin-engine stealth attack aircraft that was developed by Lockheed’s secretive Skunk Works division and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). The F-117 was based on the Have Blue technology demonstrator. The Nighthawk was the first operational aircraft to be designed around stealth technology. Its maiden flight took place in 1981 at Groom Lake, Nevada, and the aircraft achieved initial operating capability status in 1983. The Nighthawk was shrouded in secrecy until it was revealed to the public in 1988. Of the 64 F-117s built, 59 were production versions, with the other five being prototypes. The F-117 was widely publicized for its role in the Persian Gulf War of 1991. Although it was commonly referred to as the “Stealth Fighter”, it was strictly a ground-attack aircraft. F-117s took part in the conflict in Yugoslavia, where one was shot down by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) in 1999; it was the only Nighthawk to be lost in combat. Air Force retired the F-117 in 2008, primarily due to the fielding of the F-22 Raptor. Pictured here is a spectacular 1:72 scale diecast replica of a F117A Nighthawk stealth attack aircraft that was seen at the Fresno Yosemite International KFAT, California, during 2021. Dimensions: Wingspan: 7-1/4-inches Length: 11-inches. Features: – Diecast construction – Accurate markings and insignia – Full complement of weapons – Interchangeable landing gear – Opening canopy with detailed cockpit – Comes with seated pilot figure – Comes with display stand. Historical Account: “KFAT” – Fresno Yosemite International Airport (IATA: FAT, ICAO: KFAT, FAA LID: FAT) is a joint military-public airport in Fresno, California, United States. It is the primary commercial airport for the San Joaquin Valley and three national parks: Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon. It offers scheduled passenger flights to several major airline hubs in the United States and international service to Mexico. The facility opened in June 1942 as Hammer Field, a military airfield. The airport is owned and operated by the city of Fresno and operates two runways on a property spanning 1,728 acres (699 ha). Its airport code “FAT” stands for Fresno Air Terminal, a former name for the airport. Due to its central location within the state, the airport is home to several military, law enforcement, firefighting, and medical air units. The Fresno Air National Guard Base on the southeast corner of the airport is home to the 144th Fighter Wing of the California Air National Guard. The Fresno Air Attack Base on the eastern side of the airport supports aerial firefighting aircraft. Other government and military operators with facilities at the airport include the California Army National Guard, the California Highway Patrol, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fresno Police Department. Fresno is home to a large operations base for SkyWest Airlines, the nation’s largest regional airline.

In 1971, the West German government chose the F-4 Phantom II as a replacement for its Lockheed F-104G Starfighter interceptors. Initially equipped with USAF F-4E aircraft, training began for the German pilots in the spring of 1973. Later, as the F-4F was put into production by McDonnell, the F-4Es were replaced with twelve West German F-4Fs were that were given the unofficial designation of TF-4F while they were being used to train Luftwaffe crews in the United States. The Luftwaffe F-4Fs were operated with US national markings and given USAF tailcodes. By the early 2000s, the German Air Force was phasing out the Phantoms in favor of the Panavia Tornado IDS and Eurofighter Typhoon interceptors. The F-4Fs were retired and the program at Holloman was officially ended on 20 December 2004 and its aircraft were transferred to the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center. The 20th Fighter Squadron was the last operational United States Air Force squadron to fly the F-4 Phantom II. Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War. Finally phased out by the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18, the Phantom was retired in 1996.

“Aut Vincere Aut Mori (Conquer or Die)” – Motto of the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing. The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F-15E Strike Eagle is an all-weather multirole fighter, derived from the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. The F-15E was designed in the 1980s for long-range, high speed interdiction without relying on escort or electronic warfare aircraft. United States Air Force (USAF) F-15E Strike Eagles can be distinguished from other U. Eagle variants by darker camouflage and conformal fuel tanks mounted along the engine intakes. The Strike Eagle has been deployed in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Allied Force, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Odyssey Dawn carrying out deep strikes against high-value targets, combat air patrols, and providing close air support for coalition troops. It has also seen action in later conflicts and has been exported to several countries. The F-15E will be upgraded with the Raytheon APG-82 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar after 2007, and the first test radar was delivered to Boeing in 2010. It combines the processor of the APG-79 used on the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet with the antenna of the APG-63(V)3 AESA being fitted on the F-15C. The new radar upgrade is to be part of the F-15E Radar Modernization Program. The new radar was named APG-63(V)4 until it received the APG-82 designation in 2009. The RMP also includes a wideband radome (to allow the AESA to operate on more radar frequencies), and improvements to the environment control and electronic warfare systems. While some of the F-15C/Ds have been replaced by the F-22 Raptor, there is no slated replacement for the F-15E in its primary “deep strike” mission profile. The Strike Eagle is a more recent variant of the F-15, and has a sturdier airframe rated for twice the lifetime of earlier variants. The F-15Es are expected to remain in service past 2025. The USAF has pursued the Next-Generation Bomber, a medium bomber concept which could take over the Strike Eagle’s “deep strike” profile. The F-35A Lightning II is projected to eventually replace many other attack aircraft such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon and A-10 Thunderbolt II, and may also take over much of the F-15E’s role; however, the F-15E has better combat range under payload. Pictured here is a stunning 1:72 scale diecast replica of a USAF Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle multi-role fighter that was painted in a celebratory “75th Anniversary of the 4th Fighter Wing” scheme, and attached to the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, then deployed to Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina, during 2018. Dimensions: Wingspan: 7-inches Length: 10-1/2-inches. Features: – Diecast construction – Opening cockpit – Accurate markings and insignia – Full complement of weapons – Interchangeable landing gear – Comes with seated pilot figure – Comes with display stand. Historical Account: “Fourth but First” – The 4th Fighter Wing is a United States Air Force unit assigned to the Air Combat Command’s Ninth Air Force. It is stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, where it is also the host unit. The wing is one of two Air Force units that can trace its history to another country. The wing’s 4th Operations Group had its origins as the Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons Nos. 71, 121 and 133 Squadrons. When the United States entered World War II, these units, and the American pilots in them, were transferred to the United States Army Air Forces VIII Fighter Command, forming the 4th Fighter Group on September 12th, 1942. The 4th Fighter Group was the first fighter group to use belly tanks, the first to penetrate Germany, the first to accompany bombers to Berlin, the first to accomplish the England-to-Soviet Union shuttle and the first to down jet fighters. The group was credited with the destruction of 1,016 (including strafing kills) enemy aircraft, more than any other American fighter unit, and produced 38 aces.

Hobby Master 172 F-15E Strike Eagle USAF 48th FW Liberator
Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA4539 Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle Diecast Model USAF 48th FW, #92-0364 Liberator, RAF Lakenheath, England, 48th FW 70th Anniversary 2022. Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle. The 48th Fighter Wing is part of the United States Air Force’s Third Air Force, assigned to Headquarters Air Command Europe and United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). It is based at RAF Lakenheath, England. The 48 FW is the only F-15 wing based in Europe which hosts two F-15E Strike Eagle squadrons. The wing also hosts two F-35A Lightning II squadrons. The 48 FW was given the name “Statue of Liberty Wing” on 4 July 1954 and remains the only U. Air Force unit with both a name and a numerical designation. Designed to meet US Air Force requirements for an air superiority fighter to replace the F-4 Phantom, the F-15 Eagle first flew on July 27, 1972. Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas’s design in 1969 to meet the service’s need for a dedicated air superiority fighter. Since entering service in 1976, it is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat, with the majority of the kills by the Israeli Air Force. Hobby Master’s 1:72 scale F-15 is produced with a high metal content using state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques. The model features near seamless construction as seen on all Hobby Master products, and this is particularly evident with the tight-fitting conformal fuel tanks present on the F-15E variant. Separate open and closed canopy and speed brakes are included, yielding uncompromising detail that functional hinges would lack at this scale. Other fine features include a detailed cockpit interior, a variety of ordnance and drop tanks appropriate to the paint-scheme and landing gear that constructed as completed subassemblies for easy installation. Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series. The Hobby Master “1:72 Air Power Series” range presents detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft. Hobby Master “1:72 Air Power Series” diecast airplanes feature. Diecast metal construction with some plastic components. Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details. Pad printed markings and placards that won’t fade or peel like decals. Presentation stand to display the aircraft “in flight”. Accurately detailed underside with concealed screwheads.
