The pictures largly speak for them self, it is in superb worn condition, with very little wear to either the fleece or the finish, it is however beautiful broken in! There is a slight discoulouration to the back panel that may have been where something was attached, or it may be the natural variation to the finish, certainly it does not detract in any way from the appearance of the jacket. The main zip and pocket zips are the correct Talon. All in all a superb jacket that. I have attached bellow a brief description of the D-1 Jacket. Armpit to armpit: 25 (front and back). Sleeves from shoulder seam to end of cuff: 24. Across the shoulders: 2. Base of the collar to the hem at the back: 24.5. Bellow is a very brief history of the B-3 Jacket. Designated’Type D-1 Mechanics Shearling Jacket’, this model came into service with the Air Corp in the mid 1930’s. It would seem a rather lavish material to be making a mechanics jacket out of, but the D-1 like all clothing and equipment issued to US servicemen was typical of the motto’only the best will do’. Similar to the shearling flight clothing the D-1 was made and issued as a two-piece suit – its companion bottom half being the B-1 trousers. Its unfussy simple design, made from 1/4 inch fleece depth sheepskin, with two practical zippered front pockets, made it very popular not only with groundcrew, but aircrew as well. Original examples are highly sought after collector items today; more than 70 years from its conception the D-1 is still in high demand. Its hip length’boxy’ design made it popular not only with the aircrews of WWII, but also the trendy civilian after the war – without doubt a design classic. So here we have the ideal jacket to compliment your P-38 lightning, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-40 Kityhawk, P-51 Mustang or I guess if you must you Hurricane or Spitfire!
