Medal group “awarded” to F/Sgt. Story reported in newspaper may not be entirely true. There is some debate as to whether or not he was entitled to all medals he was “awarded “. If there was any deception with this man’s awards , it would have originated with him. He is pictured wearing the medal ribbons early post war for all the medals. Knowledgeable forum site members have raised questions about this lot. There is a suggestion that Mr Getman was a little economical with the truth. It appears the documentation for the Virtuti Militari and another Polish medal has been falsified using original paperwork.. The deception appears to have originated with Mr. Getman and no one else. The medals are originals. There are a couple of Stars he was not awarded and the Distinguished Flying Medal is clearly marked as a copy. A good copy , not a recent cheap one. (there is no paperwork suggesting he was awarded it). Think family just got it for him. There is also a Commemorative Bomber Command medal in there. These were first available in 1985. On a positive note. We do know Flt/Sgt Getman was held captive by the Russians in 1939. Was in the Polish Army for 1 year 1941/42. Then served in the RAF / PAF from 1943 -1948. During this time he did serve as wireless operator and Air crew Gunner. We do not know whether or not he flew 45 missions , although the paperwork does say so. We also are unsure if he was shot down and served for a time with the French Resistance… Although paperwork suggests he did. From the records we do know he served with Polish 315 Squadron and there is plenty of photos to back this up. I will retain the album for my collection , although have scanned it to disc. There are also plenty of photos of him wearing air gunners badges. He did briefly serve in N. Africa with the Army and there are a couple of photos placing him in Italy late war. Including Air Gunners and Eagle badges , Dog tags , 315 squadron Christmas card , Polish Airforce ring and bracelet. WW2 map of Hamburg dated 1943 and Emergency Ration tin dated 1943. I have now scanned f/Sgt Getman’s photo album to disc. Feel free to take a look if interested.
