Penning, a Silver Star, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross recipient. The uniform itself is in great shape. A few small moth nips here and there, but it displays wonderfully. The wings are pin back and marked Sterling for Sterling silver. The ribbon bar is a clutch back type, but missing his silver stat ribbon. There was a silver star ribbon in the pocket when I got it, so I took that to mean he simply never got a chance to add it to his ribbon bar. The only significant damage that I can find is the right hand U. Collar brace is missing its second clutch. I tried to show this in the picture, but it appears someone repainted this at some point, but replacing the clutch with a hook of some sort. It is not noticeable when on display, but I thought it was worth mentioning. The belt is also missing from the uniform, sadly. Once again, it would appear he did not get a chance to sew these on. Pennings name does not appear in the uniform anywhere, but as the article was with it when I found it, I find it hard to believe its anyone elses. The article states that Penning was a flight commander, flying Thunderbolts with the 9th Air Force Fighter-Bomber Group. The article mentions that his thunderbolt was dubbed Mary Fay III after his wife. Not sure why the III is at the end, perhaps he had multiple aircraft throughout his service. The article also states he received the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with 15 Oak Leaf Clusters. Fair to say, this man saw some combat. This is a really phenomenal uniform and would make a great addition to any collection. It has held a special place in mine for many years and I hope it will find a place in someone yours.
