A World War Two Air Crew Europe Casualty Medal Group to a Sergeant who flew in a Bristol Beaufort torpedo bomber from 217 Squadron and who was killed in action during a patrol over the English Channel on 21st June 1942. This group of medals was posthumously awarded to 982331 Sergeant Walter Joseph Parsonage Wheat who came from Liverpool. The group includes the follows. Air Crew Europe Star. Named Air Council Medal Slip. Copies of the Operations Record Book for 217 Squadron covering the dates of the loss of the aircraft. A copy of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission certificate. Walter lived at 14 Eskburn Road in Toxteth in Liverpool. He was a census and wages clerk before the war. Walter was the observer navigator on aircraft Bristol Beaufort W6528 from 217 Squadron. The aircraft was shot down during a maritime patrol over the north sea. Three of the crew were killed in action, including Walter, and one taken prisoner of war. He was 22 years old when he died. His loss and commemoration was published by his family in the Liverpool Echo newspaper in 1942 and 1943. Walter’s father, also Walter Joseph Wheat, was killed in action on 29th April 1918 with the East Lancashire Regiment with service number 38681 during the First World War.
