Ww2 RAF B-type flying helmet/G-type oxygen mask set. Nice early set consisting of a lovely example of the ubiquitous B-type helmet married to a later G-type oxygen mask. The B-type helmet was designed to take the earlier cloth D-type. However later in the war when the rubber masks were introduced some airmen wanted to keep their earlier B-type helmets, instead of moving to the later C-type helmets, either out of preference, comfort or superstition. These type of crossover flying helmet sets do turn up but are rare to find in such original untouched condition. The B-type helmet is overall in good service used condition. The leather is in good soft, supple condition with no damage or issues. The zip ears are in good condition to, with both zips working nicely. They are coming away from the bottom but not bad. The zips ears are fitted with a nice set of ear sponges, some deterioration so I would say the original ones to this set. The interior of the helmet shows alot of service use, it is soiled and some wear to the brow pad. The interior shows a nice “Frank Bryan” label, which is A. M crown marked and a size 2. Nice early date of 1939 too. The Interior is also marked with two names, unfortunately slightly illegible. My best guess at the names are “RICKETS” on the bottom left side. On the other side I cannot really make it out but my best guess is “ROBETRIGM”? Of course I could be wildly wrong but unfortunately just too illegible. The ear donuts show service use and one does have a small tear. The straps both in good condition, the chin one with some strange narrowing but still strong and usable. The helmet is wired with an external loom, later type 32 earphones and a type 25 microphone. The microphone suffering some crazing to the rubber. Jack plug and cord all in good condition with a nice shortening knot to the loom. Leading onto the G-type oxygen mask, this example does display well but with these early masks the rubber has suffered some crazing, splitting and losses mainly to the edges. The rest of the mask does look good and the interior chamois is in again service soiled, but good condition. The harness retains good elasticity. The mask has been attached directly to the helmet with some screws on the left hand side and a mask hook has been stitched to the right hand side so it can be unclipped. Overall a lovely early flying helmet set, ideal for completing an RAF pilot/aircrew display. Perfect for display in a ww2 RAF collection, museum display or reinactor display.
