RARE 1950s vintage USAF Pilot flight helmet Gentex DH5-3 Experimental Prototype
The DH-5 was developed by Gentex in the mid 1950s as a USAF version of the US Navy DH-5-3 to replace the P-4 variants. Its shell was constructed of a fiberglass cloth reinforced with epoxy resin and internal suspension system adjustable by external straps was used. The DH-5 incorporates the earphone so no internal cloth helmet was used, the oxygen mask was secured to fast snap bottoms on external leather tabs. The external visor was moved and secured by means of two lateral tracks system. The USAF chose the HGU-2/P so this helmet never reached the operational service. Major General Jack Kenneth Gamble earned his AAF pilot wings in 1943, and flew 93 combat missions in the Bristol Beaufighter as part of the 414th Night Fighter Squadron on missions over North Africa, Sardinia, Corsica, Southern France, and Northern Italy. He was officially credited with a joint kill on a Luftwaffe Dornier Do217 “Flying Pencil” bomber on January 23, 1944. He assumed command of the 29th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (flying the F-94 Starfire) in December 1953, then the 319th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (flying the F-106 Delta Dart) in November 1960, and subsequently served as the director of operations of the 86th Air Division (flying the F-102 Delta Dagger) out of Ramstein Air Base, Germany from July 1964 to July 1967. He commanded the 52nd Fighter Wing and then the 35th Air Division in the late 1960s, and his last assignment was as the commander of the Alaskan Air Command, a post that he held from March 1974 to his retirement in September 1975. Jack Gamble earned two stars and the rank of Major General, and enjoyed a 30 plus year career in the US Air Force. This USAF Vietnam Era MAJOR GENERAL JACK GAMBLE EXPERIMENTAL L-2A STYLE FLIGHT JACKET is in very good condition, with an overall malodorous air from storage in a smoky room, some light stitch holes at the left chest and each shoulder strap where previous insignia once were, some scattered soiling to the plastic covering of the name badge at the left chest, some light cracking to the inner corners of that plastic covering, some scattered whitish and dark soiling at each wrist, some fraying to the experimental label at the inside neck, some “browning” to the information tag below that label, a laundry ticket stapled to that information tag, some grayish soiling at the top shoulders, some dark soiling at the left back, and with some scattered age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the jacket is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough blue wool gabardine construction. Most interestingly, it’s a Size 44R, bears the original plastic covered silver stamped black leather wings/name badge of Command Pilot Major General Jack K. Gamble at the left chest, the striking machine embroidered patch of the “43RD TACTICAL FIGHTER SQUADRON” at the right chest (an F-4 Phantom squadron assigned to Alaskan Air Command under CO General Jack Gamble), and the familiar plastic covered two star Major General rank insignia at each shoulder strap, and carries the traditional “EXPERIMENTAL TEST SAMPLE / CLOTHING BRANCH” label at the inside neck. It boasts the classic black knit collar, cuffs, and waistband, sports a fully functional “CONMAR” darkened brass front zipper, and features slash entry, darkened brass “glove” snap flap closure lower front “hand warmer” pockets, a snap closure front waist tab, snap down shoulder straps, and a smooth blue satin lining. A fine example of a very rare, original USAF Vietnam Era MAJOR GENERAL JACK GAMBLE EXPERIMENTAL L-2A STYLE FLIGHT JACKET. We have shown a photo of General Jack Gamble in the early 1970s. Super Rare, GENTEX flight helmet type HGU-35/P in mint condition! Designed in the late 70’s-early 80’s, this was a prototype flight helmet designed to meet US Navy Fighter Aircrew requirements for a lighter, more stable helmet to replace the heavier and less stable APH-6, but never entered full production, making this an extremely rare item! This helmet was designed to be used with a specifically built, integrated oxygen mask which fed oxygen to the pilot through the hose at the back and through a duct inside the helmet shell to the mask at the front. The rear hose design was to eliminate the additional weight of the oxygen mask hose at the front of the helmet by moving the center of gravity of the helmet rearward offering less fatigue to the pilot during air combat in a high G environment. The mask, ductwork, and connectors are present as is the liner and earcups and all the wiring. This is an excellent example of one of the more elusive collectible flight helmets. There are five visor lenses one mounted on the helmet and four packaged lenses from clear to gradient tinted types. The original typed performance sheet on this helmet is included. In the series of photos, you will note the original plastic bag being opened and then various shots as we removed the components included with the helmet so you can see that this system is complete. The Oxygen mask, visors, and several other items are left in their original packing. The enclosed GENTEX letter is dated October 1980 containing the helmet number. This helmet has never been put on a head. I do not know much of anything about it and much of the above description is from a previous listing on the internet, but changed to describe this helmet rather than the used one listed. Pauly is commander, Allied Air Forces Central Europe, and commander in chief, U. Air Forces in Europe, with headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. General Pauly was born in Albany, N. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy, Albany, N. In 1940, and attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N. For two years before entering the U. Military Academy at West Point, N. He received a commission as a second lieutenant and a bachelor of science degree from the academy in June 1945. He also earned his pilot wings while attending the academy. General Pauly was awarded a master of science degree in international relations from The George Washington University in 1965. Following graduation from West Point, General Pauly attended B-25 and B-17 transition training and Junior Officers Staff School prior to reporting to the 60th Troop Carrier Group, Munich, Germany, in February 1946. He later served there as an instructor at the Central Pilots School of the U. Air Forces in Europe and as assistant operations officer for the 11th Troop Carrier Squadron. Returning to the United States in June 1948, he was assigned as a training officer and later as commander of the headquarters squadron for the Mobile Air Materiel Area, Brookley Air Force Base, Ala. In November 1951, during the Korean War, General Pauly was assigned to the 8th Bombardment Squadron, 3rd Bombardment Wing, at Kunsan, Korea, as flying safety officer and squadron operations officer. While with the 3rd Bombardment Wing, he flew 55 night intruder combat missions, totaling 230 combat hours in B-26 aircraft. Following his tour of duty in Korea, General Pauly was assigned to Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. Over a span of almost four years, he served first as an operations staff officer and later as chief of the bombardment division within the Operations Directorate. General Pauly was assigned to Headquarters U. Air Force in July 1959 and served as a planning and programming officer in the Directorate of Plans until 1962, when he become the assistant executive officer to General Curtis E. LeMay, then the chief of staff, U. In August 1964 he entered the National War College in Washington, D. And upon graduation the following summer become the deputy commander for operations, 317th Troop Carrier Wing, Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio. General Pauly was assigned as the deputy chief of staff, operations, for the 315th Air Division, Tachikawa Air Base, Japan, in June 1966. In July 1968 he assumed command of the 315th Air Commando Wing at Phan Rang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. In July 1969 General Pauly was transferred to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D. As the Air Force member of the Chairman’s Staff Group, while General Earle G. In September 1970 he was assigned as deputy director for regional operations, J-3, of the Joint Staff and in June 1972 became vice director for operations of the Joint Staff. General Pauly assumed command of the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division with headquarters at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. In July 1976 General Pauly was assigned as vice commander in chief, USAFE, and in August 1978 was appointed commander in chief, USAFE, and AAFCE commander. He is a command pilot with more than 6,000 hours of flying time.
