Vintage Buzz Ricksons USAF B-15D (MOD) Bomber Flight Jacket

Replaced the earlier B-15B flying jacket. By 1950, the USAF began changing the color of most of its flying clothing from Olive Drab to Air Force Blue to force a separate identitiy from the U. The designation MOD stands for modified, meaning the B-15 flying jacket has been modified by removing the fur collar, replacing it by a wool knit collar. Modification was intended to adopt new larger hard shell helmets interfered with the mouton collar causing discomfort. Since the modification had to be performed after the jacket was originally made, it is typical to find the actual collar knit & thread colours around collar and waistband not matching the overall knit & thread colours used. Modified B-15 jackets were required to have new white labels, indicating this new modified status sewn on the jacket. In all other ways, the flying jacket remained a B-15 of whatever spec it was originally. Fits true to size. Take your normal size. Zipper tab has fallen off but is still functional. Water repellent 100% nylon flight satin outer shell, quilted nylon lining and polyester interlining. Fully lined, double-stitched front cargo pockets with button closure. USAF L-2A Flight Jacket by Buzz Rickson's Size 38

This is a beautiful example of an early 1950s US Air Force L-2A flight jacket. Manufactured by Buzz Rickson’s from Japan, this jacket was acquired two years ago in Osaka, home of Buzz Rickson’s company. The L-2A was created in the early 1950s during the Korean War conflict, it saw action in that war and was presented to fighter pilots in the front air bases flying mainly the F-86 Sabre. It served the USAF aviators until the late 1950s and was superseded by the L-2B in Sage Green color. This wonderful product by Buzz Rickson’s is perfect in all details, from the nylon shell to the silkish liner both in their accurate Air Force Blue. The jacket comes with a wonderful set of embroidered patches of a Fighter Squadron flying the venerable F-101 VooDoo fighter which was one of the premier fighter squadrons flying the aircraft in the Mid 50s and until the 1960s in the Vietnam War. Other decorations are a canvas nametag with pilot name and Major leather rank bars on the shoulders. The standard USAF roundel decal is present on the left shoulder however it has peeled off a little bit. Beautiful metal Crown Zippers on both the front and the left arm pocket are another excellent detail. Shoulders width: 18.5 in. Pit to Pit: 22 in. Back length: 25 in. Arm length: 26 in. The jacket is in perfect condition with no major signs of wear, no rips nor holes on the material. The wool cuffs and waistband are free of holes and maintain perfect elasticity. It includes all it’s Buzz Rickson’s certifications of authenticity. Buzz’s L-2A products run a wide and this one in particular can also fit a Size 40 perfectly. The jacket is clean throughout, except for a few darned moth holes in the wool knits by previous owner- they are very hard to spot, and I trust the new owner will feel the same. Measurements provided below, but keep in mind this jacket has a relatively thick pile lining so fits much trimmer than the chest measurement suggests. Im generally as sz 40-42 in jackets (22-23 pit-to-pit), and this fits me perfectly. Measurements, jacket laid absolutely flat. Length (base of collar to base of waist knit): 24.5. Air Force Type B-15C Intermediate Flight Jacket replaced the earlier Olive Drab B-15B Flight Jacket beginning in 1950. It has only been worn once or twice and stored in a smoke free home. No stains or tears. Measurements: Chest- 27 Shoulder- 21 Arm length- 27 Back length- 25. Buzz Rickson has reproduced the B-15C mod. Flight Jacket in exacting detail.
