WW2 RAF Irvin sheepskin flying jacket. A nice early pattern Irvin sheepskin flying jacket. This was originally a wired sheepskin jacket, used with matching trousers and the heated RAE gloves and boots. This jacket has been updated later in the war with the cables removed leaving behind a good usable jacket. This Irvin was made by Wareing and Co in 1939-40. It is an electrically wired jacket, with the remains of the loom still present. The jacket itself was not heated but it contained the wiring loom to heat the gloves. It was refurbished in 1945 under the 40288 contract which was specifically for repairing Irvins. The two panel back and front construction and the use of single trunnion Dot zips dates the jacket to the early War. Wired jackets were no longer made after 1941/2 and often the wiring was removed and the leather housings left, as is the case with this jacket. The 40288 refurbishment contract, which was awarded first in 1943. The jacket itself has all original zips in good working order. No major holes, damage etc but the cuffs appear to have been removed and some tidying up would improve the appearance. The sheepskin still retaining good colour and stength. The original belt is fitted and in good condition too. The jacket is a relatively small size, the chest physically measuring 22 inches from armpit to armpit. Due to the thick sheepskin it’s more likely to fit around a 40 inch chest comfortably. The jacket is labelled but with no size indicated, dated 1945. The label is anew label to the jacket due to it being updated and repaired later in the war. Overall a good service used jacket, Ideal for completing a RAF bomber aircrew display. Becoming harder to find now in such lovely condition. Ideal for a ww2 RAF musuem aircrew display, RAF collection or reinactor display. The leather is tanned in a dark USAF Brown with the desirable honey sheepskin fleece. 100% leather tanned in wartime style USAF Brown. 100% genuine sheepskin fleece in honey. Double stitched cowhide bindings. Waist side adjuster straps. Main heavy duty zip. Two neck leather straps with brass buckles. The jacket will fit a size 38 chest comfortable fit. Please view jacket measurements below which are taken laid flat and zipped up. Shoulder seam to shoulder seam = 20 inches. Underarm to underarm = 21 inches. Shoulder seam to end of cuff = 26 inches. Here is an original wonderful hand-painted leather and sheepskin USAF B-3 bomber or fighter pilot’s jacket, with great history! The jacket has the original maker label inside. The lining is in good condition. The front zipper is broken and there is a significant tear in the back of the collar, so it would be considered as a display jacket unless repaired. It is in untouched condition, just as it was found! The painted art on the back of the coat is in excellent condition, still bright after some 70 years or so. Unique artwork, museum quality! Original D-O-T brand zips and all puller tags working. Lining, belt, collar strap rings and chain hanger. The leather is good, generally a good looking early jacket with the AirMinistry Kings Crown. Stamp on the label. Size 3 – A regular medium fit – see pics. Nicely worn vintage condition – wearable with functioning zips and closures. From my private collection of Antique Military items.
