Vintage, Type D-12 Aperiodic navigational compass. Used in many US WWII aircraft heavy bombers, medium bombers, and transports. This compass does not have a Bendix Aviation Corp. However, it is embossed stamped on the base “BX 59″, and marked in white “R 15″, and with a “v” inside of an “0”. Measures 7″Diameter X slightly over 4″H. The outside is embossed stamped “AFT” above opening. Glass is clear and scratch free. Face screws on/off well. 12 photos are a part of this description. WW2 American US Air Force USAAF B-17 Bomber Flying Fortress Navigator Compass. Genuine USAAF D-12 compass as used by navigators in the B-17 Flying Fortress during bombing campaigns over Europe during the Second World War. Please see the photos for an image of the same type of compass in a B-17 navigation station. The compass is in very good clean condition and in working order. The direction and degree increments are still visible and there is no damage to the glass. The compass was manufactured by Bendix Aviation Corporation, Pioneer Instrument Division, Bendix, New Jersey U. The serial no is AF-42-12609, the 42 denoting the year of manufacture 1942. History: This was left in my Mother & Father’s belongings, now sadly both passed away. I’m afraid all we know about this button is that it was my Mother’s Mother who was married to a RAF Pathfinder in the War – he was shot down and was never found. She then re-married and he also fought in the war and lived. Which one this button belonged to, we dont know im afraid, just know its original and a family treasure… Now ready to go to a Collector.
