USAF Flight Helmet F-105 Thunderchief Vietnam War Flying Pilot HGU MBU-5/P THUD

I bought this set straight from this Thud Driver in 2009. Size of the helmet is MEDIUM and more interesting is that this shell has served earlier as a dual visor “ramshorn” helmet shell before it was converted to a single visor helmet! Maybe all the new stuff were need for Vietnam. Lieutenaunt Emerson Taylor served 1969-70 at Takhli during his one year combat tour with 354th TFS/355 TFW. If I remember right he flew some 67 combat mission during his Vietnam combat tour. You will get also a few JPEG photos of his years at Thakli (354th TFS) and Kansas (562nd TFS). I will included also a couple of A4 sheets of his flight caree as a F-105 & A-7 pilot. This helmet is from his days at 562nd TFS at McConnel AFB, Kansas, after his SEA 1969-70 combat tour. The dates from his MBU-5/P matches his SEA combat tour years from Vietnam era. He retired in 1987 as a major after 20 years of service and only a few “hours” (years) as a USAF desk jobs pilot. Offering this cool grouping from a C-135 transport pilot who made a career of the U. In the 1980’s thru Desert Storm I era…. He retired to fly as a senior Captain with SouthWest Airlines. There is a Saudi made squadron patch among the insignia… Check my other lots for more from this pilot… Combat boots & survival gear & SW Airlines uniform hat are offered in other listings NOW. The HGU -55/p helmet is a size LARGE custom fitted by GenTex to this pilot… Helmet is in VGC+ overall – there is the boom microphone favored by transport pilots attached to the shell – The headset speakers are dated 1982 – their foam cover has fallen away from age…. A nice helmet overall. MBU- 5/P Oxygen Mask is in VGC+ still soft & supple, dated 1980…. It all looks good! Included is a selection of his squadron patches and unit scarves as well as 2 T-shirts from his service activities I found among the sale items that day. His survival radio is included also! I have a pen and ink artists’ portrait of the pilot wearing his flight suit with his transport aircraft in the background is part of this group. Size is about 20″x 20″ and is rolled up. His USAF issue flight crew combat boots are listed for sale now, and a second lot of misc. USAF HGU-55/P FLIGHT HELMET, MBU-5/P OXYGEN MASK & CRU-60 Connector-Circa 2000

An original USAF HGU-55/P Flight Helmet complete with cloth padded head liner, smoked gray visor & protective leather cover with stitched patch. Helmet is fitted with an MBU-5/P Oxygen mask – both are fully wired. Oxygen mask has a CRU-60/P Connector & U-174/U Jack Plug (photo 9). The helmet has the lightweight oxygen mask bayonet receivers and is complete with nape and chin straps, and edge rolls. Can’t see a label but the helmet is a probable size Small to a maximum Medium. Earphone outer sponges (photo 10) are fatigued and need replacing. No material damage to the helmet shell. The MBU-5/P mask is complete, but does have two small repaired hairline cracks in the hard shell. In addition there are scattered minute chips to the edge of the hard shell where the bayonet clips are located, but the effect is insignificant. I believe the mask is made by SCOTT and is dated 2000/2001/2002, and is marked a size SHORT/NARROW. Note: the helmet is likely in the same time period as the mask. The MBU-5/P oxygen mask was introduced in the 1960’s and was replaced with the up-dated MBU-12/P design. However, the MBU-5/P is still used on occasions (as in this case) where the 12/P design is NOT A GOOD FIT TO THE FACE FEATURES. The PSD Patch represents the PHYSIOLOGICAL SUPPORT DIVISION for the U-2 & SR-71 aircraft, which provides specialized support in the high altitude role – obviously the SR-71 operations have long ceased. I was told this helmet/mask combination came from a member of the Aerospace Physiological Training Flight (APTF) at Beale AFB north of Sacramento – I understand this flight operates the T-38 a/c. The patch shown sown onto the visor cover was introduced late 1970’s through to around the early 2000’s. I can’t confirm the Beale connection but the timeline looks about right.
