US WWII A-2 LEATHER FLIGHT JACKET PILOT IS ID’D 15TH AIR FORCE SHOT DOWN IN 1944. This is a US WW2 A-2 Leather Flight Jacket. This fabulous jacket has survived 2 years of actual WAR, including almost a year in a German (Stalog 3) POW Camp. The German POW Guards highly prized the A-2 Jackets and were ALWAYS trying to get one anyway they could. It has even survived that! The Pilot is identified (D H Sampson). He was a member of the 773 Bomb Squadron – 463 Bomb Group – 15th US Army Air Force stationed in Italy. Also included are 2 plastic beer mugs from 2 Unit Reunions. The jacket shows lots of wear. There are split seams, holes in the cuffs and waist band. The leather is some what dry and stiff. What this jacket needs is someone who can inject some TLC and the proper leather restorative lotion. I don’t want you to think it’s falling apart but it does need some attention so it can survive another 75 years. The original name plate and pilot wings are still in place on the left breast. It’s an incredible story of being shot down over Hungary and surviving the bale out just to land in a German POW Camp from June 1944 until the end of the War. It’s an all original USAAF A-2 Leather Flight Jacket from World War 2. Help preserve a GREAT piece of US history. The estate has priced it to sell. Overall, I would say that it’s in to very good condition considering it’s age and history. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE LISTING. Please see ALL PHOTOS and read the description. Up for sale here is a Vietnam War era US Air Force fighter pilot helmet, bag and flight coveralls from the estate of the late Lieutenant Colonel Larry L. Nunn of Conway, Arkansas and originally from Miles City, Montana. The helmet is by Sierra Engineering Co. The exterior is in fair to good condition, but the interior is in poor condition. The bag and flight coveralls are both in good condition. Coveralls are a size 40R. He was one of the last graduates of the USAF cadet pilot training programs in 1956. He was a fighter pilot who logged thousands of hours flying and served two combat tours in Southeast Asia and was awarded numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was stationed in Taiwan as a part of the United States Taiwan Defense Command and Tactical Air Command. Please see photos for details and condition. Description: Original WW2 uniform grouping consisting of a small Ike jacket (no label) & crusher cap. The jacket has captain’s rank & other pins, plastic covered ribbon bar, & sterling silver pilot’s wings, as well as an Italian made bullion 15th AAF shoulder patch. These items belonged to a pilot in the 416th Bomb Squadron, 99th Bombardment Group, & flew 51 combat missions. He received the DFC, the Air Medal with 4 OLC’s, the EAME medal with 4 battle stars, & a Presidential Unit Citation. The winner will be provided with his name & all known info. The crusher cap is very warped, the Ike jacket’s buttons are in very rough shape, the shoulder patch has wear along the border, the jacket has several moth holes, & the jacket liner has numerous holes. The diary was kept by B-17 Waist Gunner Emile R. Martineau was a member of the M. Lovell (pilot) crew and completed 18 combat bombing missions against Germany from 2/10/1945 to 4/18/1945. The diary has super content regarding the missions flown including flak, flak damage, damaged and shot down B-17’s, and also his fear of encountering German Jets. The diary starts on 2/3/1945 and goes to his final combat mission. There are more than 18 entries as several missions were postponed or scrubbed. It took his crew 5 tries to finally get their 1st completed mission due to engine trouble, weather, and scrubbed missions. The mission diary is entirely written in legible period ink by Martineau. The diary measures 6 x 4 inches in size. The last photo is some information that I printed off of the internet about the original owner of the diary and everything dates, missions, etc.. correspond to the diary. Interesting Canadian aviation history! All of this came directly from a family member to a Buffalo, New York coin dealer and then to me. It originally belonged to Joseph “Joe” Barber, Jamestown, New York, 1st Lt. Co-pilot with pilot 1st Lt. Hank Holmes of a B-24 “Fairy Belle II”, 392nd Bomb Group, 577th Bomb Squadron. The B-24 saw action October 15, 1944 on a mission to bomb Cologne when she was hit by flak at 22,000 ft. The crew jettisoned everything including bombs, guns, radios and received escort from three P-51’s but crashed in a field near Brussels without serious casualties. There is a great deal of information about this incident on the internet and I will include what I have copied. This includes the B-24Second Generation Research pages on the 15 October 1944 Mission # 185 Target: Cologne Crew Loading List with Barber’s name and crew listed. The entire official crash report is on the internet, but I could not copy it. Barber’s post-war story is even more fascinating. His plane was found largely intact but without any sign of the pilot, leading his family to believe that he attempted to walk to civilization. A massive rescue operation was undertaken, with paratroopers dropped to build an airstrip where an expert Indian tracker was to land and join the search. This triggered one of the most well-known and extensive search missions in Canadian history, along with many rumors about what happened to Joe Barber, including his survival. Unfortunately, having survived extensive WWII 8th Air Force combat, he was never found after his crash in the Canadian woods. This lot includes his Distinguished Flying Cross, WWII, unnamed as issued, cased and complete with ribbon bar and lapel pin, his Air Medal, unnamed as issued with titled case, ribbon bar and lapel pin, full wrap brooch, two Air Force patches, one 8th Air Force patch, Army Air Corps Cadet hat badge, 3″ pilot wings, clutch back, looks like sterling but no hallmark, and a pair of Air Corps brass, a pair of “U. Also included is a neat reward poster following his disappearance, a copy of the typed manuscript “Journey into Oblivion, ” written by his brother John describing the crash and search, an 8″ x 10″ photo of the crashed plane with a person his brother? Standing next to it, three original portraits of Butler in uniform, one of which describes the incident at reverse, three images of newspaper clippings related to the search, one original clipping, a three page affidavit by the brother describing the situation, and a letter to him from J. Edgar Hoover on official FBI stationary. Also included is a copy and description of the Cologne mission and a printed image of the Fairy Belle II’s nose art, a copy of an Alberto Vargas pin-up. “Journey Into Oblivion” is a multi-page story by Barber’s brother that includes many details of his 8th Air Force service and then the plane crash. The brother visited the site several times, hiring guides to go look for Lt. Barber and those efforts are described in the manuscript. Edgar Hoover FBI letter to brother John Barber stating that the Bureau did not have the authority to open an active investigation about the family’s suggestion that Lt. Joe Barber might have survived the crash and re-enlisted in the U. ” I have no idea if this is a secretarial or original signature, but other than the use of the “E. ” instead of “Edgar, it looks exactly like those I found with a google search.
