Under control of the 920th Tactical Airlift Group (Reserve). 1, 1976 the unit was re-designated as the 815th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron when its parent, the 920th, was re-designated a weather reconnaissance group. For the next 12 years, the 815th WRS tracked storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic, Caribbean Basin, Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Pacific. In 1983, the 920th WRG was deactivated, and the 815th WRS came under the direct operational control of the 403rd Rescue and Weather Reconnaissance Wing, which moved its headquarters to Keesler. Spangdahlem was built in 1951 in response to rising tensions in the Cold War, with the help of France since the area of the base was in French territory. The stein is named to Nicholas S. Albano and reads: 10th RECONNAISSANCE TECHNICAL SQUADRON SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE GERMANY 1955 1958. During this time the 10th completed many recon missions, the squadron operated the Lockheed Shooting Star by day and the Douglas Invader by night. In 1954 the Martin RB-57A replaced the Douglas RB-26 and Republic Aviation RF-84-F Thunderjets replaced the Lockheed RF-80. Each side of the stein features hand painted detail, insignia and a map of Germany pinpointing the location of the airbase. The lid of the stein features wonderfully detailed Douglas RB-66 Destroyer Jet, and eagle perched on a US Shield. The base of the stein is lithophane and features the outline of a shapely woman when held up to the light (see photo). VINTAGE: Circa 1955 – 1958. Here is a very scarce opportunity for a very rare grouping. Fred rella was from the Bronx New York. After the war he eventually resided and retired upstate NY. A friend of mine went to his estate sale and subsequently acquired some material. Everything in my pics is period but the two photos are copies that were given to me by my friend who kept the two original photographs. The leather patch is a killer piece and was Fred rellas patch.
