USAF HGU-55/P FLIGHT HELMET, MBU-5/P OXYGEN MASK & CRU-60 Connector-Circa 2000
An original USAF HGU-55/P Flight Helmet complete with cloth padded head liner, smoked gray visor & protective leather cover with stitched patch. Helmet is fitted with an MBU-5/P Oxygen mask – both are fully wired. Oxygen mask has a CRU-60/P Connector & U-174/U Jack Plug (photo 9). The helmet has the lightweight oxygen mask bayonet receivers and is complete with nape and chin straps, and edge rolls. Can’t see a label but the helmet is a probable size Small to a maximum Medium. Earphone outer sponges (photo 10) are fatigued and need replacing. No material damage to the helmet shell. The MBU-5/P mask is complete, but does have two small repaired hairline cracks in the hard shell. In addition there are scattered minute chips to the edge of the hard shell where the bayonet clips are located, but the effect is insignificant. I believe the mask is made by SCOTT and is dated 2000/2001/2002, and is marked a size SHORT/NARROW. Note: the helmet is likely in the same time period as the mask. The MBU-5/P oxygen mask was introduced in the 1960’s and was replaced with the up-dated MBU-12/P design. However, the MBU-5/P is still used on occasions (as in this case) where the 12/P design is NOT A GOOD FIT TO THE FACE FEATURES. The PSD Patch represents the PHYSIOLOGICAL SUPPORT DIVISION for the U-2 & SR-71 aircraft, which provides specialized support in the high altitude role – obviously the SR-71 operations have long ceased. I was told this helmet/mask combination came from a member of the Aerospace Physiological Training Flight (APTF) at Beale AFB north of Sacramento – I understand this flight operates the T-38 a/c. The patch shown sown onto the visor cover was introduced late 1970’s through to around the early 2000’s. I can’t confirm the Beale connection but the timeline looks about right. VINTAGE 1950s TOPPING BELL AIRCRAFT FAST HIGH FLYING USAF X-1A DESK MODEL PLANE
DESCRIPTION: This is a factory built desk model of the U. Air Force Bell X-1A from the early 1950s. The name plate on the stand base is marked BELL X-1A THE WORLD’S FASTEST AND HIGHEST FLYING AIRPLANE DESIGNED AND BUILT FOR THE U. AIR FORCE BY BELL Aircraft CORP. It may have been made by Topping, but it is not marked. This plane came out of the estate of an 101 year old retired Wright Patterson Air Force Base officer. MATERIALS: Plastic plane with wood and clear plastic Lucite? DIMENSIONS: Measures about 10-½ inches long, and has about an 8-3/8 inch wingspan. CONDITION: Overall in VERY GOOD CONDITION. It has a little dirt on it from long term storage. In my opinion, the rear wings have an old glue repair where they attach to the plane. The sharp pin in the plane fuselage is solid, but fits a bit loosely in the hole of the stand support arm. This is a great old factory built model of a famous plane from the early 1950s. It will be a nice addition to your desk model military plane collection. ALWAYS CHECK MY LISTINGS FOR OTHER INTERESTING ITEMS! Northrop USAF F-89D Scorpion Fighter Jet All Metal Desktop Model
Both plane and stand are constructed of a white pot metal. Plane measures 12″ wide from wingtip to wingtip, 11 1/2″ long from nose to tip of tail and is 9 tall on its original stand. It is decorated both with water decals and airbrush accents. The airbrush portions are the cockpit windscreen and the exhaust from the jet engines. Water decals represent the United States Air Force. Condition of the model is very good with no breaks. There is some minor decal loss to both decals on top of the wings and the one located on the right side of the vertical stabilizer. There are some minor chips to the black paint on the base. All condition issues are minor and I don’t believe they affect the overall appearance of this vintage 1950’s desktop model.
