The 60th Air Mobility Wing (60 AMW) is the host unit at Travis Air Force Base in California. It is the largest air mobility organization in the United States Air Force and is responsible for strategic airlift and aerial refueling missions around the world. Its mission is to provide rapid, reliable airlift of American fighting forces anywhere on earth in support of national objectives and to extend the reach of American and allied air power through mid-air refueling. Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for “drive-through” loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high. This is in addition to an upper deck with seating for 73 passengers. Current versions of the aircraft are capable of lifting up to 270,000 lbs of cargo.
