In addition to their responsibilities as the official US Air Force aerial demonstration team, the Thunderbirds are part of the combat force. If required, the team’s personnel and aircraft can be rapidly integrated into a fighter unit at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Since the aircraft are only slightly modified, they can be made combat-ready in less than 72 hours. In 1988, the Thunderbirds were asked to demonstrate this capability with one of their aircraft. Maintenance crews rose to the challenge and transformed aircraft #10 in the allotted time. The finished result was quite unique. The aircraft retained its colorful red, white and blue paint scheme but was fully combat ready with 20mm cannon, bombs, missiles and ECM pod. Major BJ Java test flew the jet, fired the cannon and dropped bombs before returning to the base with a huge smile. After its historic flight, somebody wrote the word’Warbird’ with their finger in the soot that clung to the fuselage in front of the gun barrel. The name caught on and was later painted on the side of the engine intake. Designed by General Dynamics as a lightweight, daytime USAF air-combat fighter, the F-16 was first flown on January 20th, 1974. This single-engine, supersonic aircraft has, over the years, evolved into a multirole aircraft. It has a frameless bubble canopy-giving its pilot superior visibility-and it uses advanced aerodynamics. The F-16 was one of the first designs to use a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire system, which helps it pull 9-g maneuvers and achieve speeds of more than Mach 2. Called’Viper’ by its pilots, the F-16 is considered one of the most successful aircraft designs of the Cold War, with 4,400+ aircraft built since 1976.

This new, unopened model is a 1:48 scale die-cast model of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a World War II-era American fighter aircraft, produced by the Franklin Mint as part of their Armour Collection. The P-38 Lightning was a versatile aircraft used for various missions, including dive bombing, photo reconnaissance, and long-range escort. It was the only American front-line fighter in production from the beginning to the end of WWII. The P-38 was the first 400 mph fighter and had a 40,000-foot ceiling. It was known for its distinctive twin-boom design and powerful armament. The model is hand-decorated and fully assembled, with authentic details and precise scaling. The P-38 played a significant role in the Pacific theater due to its long range. It was nicknamed the “fork-tailed devil” by the Germans. Over 9,900 P-38s were built during the war. This model is part of my late father’s life-long collection. He was a brilliant historian who had an extensive appreciation for WWII memorabilia and also classic cars. See my other listings also!
In 1971, the West German government chose the F-4 Phantom II as a replacement for its Lockheed F-104G Starfighter interceptors. Initially equipped with USAF F-4E aircraft, training began for the German pilots in the spring of 1973. Later, as the F-4F was put into production by McDonnell, the F-4Es were replaced with twelve West German F-4Fs were that were given the unofficial designation of TF-4F while they were being used to train Luftwaffe crews in the United States. The Luftwaffe F-4Fs were operated with US national markings and given USAF tailcodes. By the early 2000s, the German Air Force was phasing out the Phantoms in favor of the Panavia Tornado IDS and Eurofighter Typhoon interceptors. The F-4Fs were retired and the program at Holloman was officially ended on 20 December 2004 and its aircraft were transferred to the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center. The 20th Fighter Squadron was the last operational United States Air Force squadron to fly the F-4 Phantom II. Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War. Finally phased out by the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18, the Phantom was retired in 1996.

In early 2022, an F-22 Raptor from the 411th Test and Evaluation Squadron was seen flying at Edwards Air Force Base with unusual pods mounted under its wings. The pods’ angular shape suggests a stealthy design to help maintain the Raptor’s low radar signature. While the exact function of these pods remains speculative, it is likely they house an infrared search and track sensor (IRST). This system would enable the F-22 to detect and track other aircraft, including stealthy ones, at long ranges. Being completely passive and immune to electronic warfare, this capability was initially planned for the F-22 but was eventually dropped due to cost concerns. Designed to meet a US Air Force requirement for an Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) to replace the F-15 Eagle, the F-22 was first flown on September 29th, 1990. The USAF’s ATF program aimed to produce a fifth-generation air superiority fighter that would be better matched against emerging new aircraft such as the Su-27 Flanker. The F-22 uses stealth technology and can function in air superiority, ground attack, intelligence and electronic warfare roles. Despite its capabilities, the F-22 program was relatively short-lived; by 2010 its high cost coupled with the development of the F-35 (a more versatile and less expensive aircraft) led to a cessation of F-22 production funding.
