Listing is for (1) cap as shown. The basis for my determination that this is a WWII-era cap is as follows. The eagle insignia has a height of 2 3/4 and made of pewter, this eagle was favored by pilots during the war. The buttons holding on the strap are a pre-1955 version, going back to the 1930’s. The cap has a card holder on the inside. The card (which would be very difficult to remove, looks as if someone tried) bears the name Harold Leroy Graybill, Lt. Colonel, United States Air Force. A bit of research led me to a distinguished veteran with the aforementioned name (He passed away in 2004 in the same small city I live in) who, according to his obituary, flew C-47’s during WWII. Still, there is a possibility that the cap is post-war, as Lt. Graybill served his country for 30 years. I did polish the Eagle, there is a line between a nice patina and just plain blacked-out. Is this case, the later was true. Other than that I used a clothing brush to remove lint, and used a bit of leather lotion on the strap and headband. Hats off (no pun) to Lt. Graybill for his distinguished service to our country. I hope his cap finds a place in a collection befitting its historical significance. Please review all photos carefully.
