Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA5417 Northrop AT-38B Talon Diecast Model USAF 479th TTW, 435th TTFS, #63-8172, Holloman AFB, NM, 1980s. The AT-38B Talon is a supersonic advanced trainer used by the US Air Force as part of its Lead In Fighter Training, or LIFT, program. Derived from the T-38A, the AT-38B was modified for tactical instruction with a strengthened wing, underwing pylons, and a gunsight system. It allowed student pilots to practice air to ground attack, air combat maneuvering, and formation tactics at high speed before transitioning to frontline fighters such as the F-4, F-15, and F-16. The AT-38B played a key role in bridging basic jet training and operational fighter aircraft. Designed as a supersonic jet trainer to replace the T-33, the T-38 was based on the F-5 Freedom Fighter airframe and was first flown on March 10th, 1959. The pressurized tandem-seat cockpit offers excellent visibility for both student and instructor and provides a comfortable training environment. Being both lightweight and nimble, the T-38 is used extensively to prepare military pilots for high performance jet aircraft and has earned the nickname “White Rocket”. The T-38 was famously flown by the USAF Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron during the 1970s and proved popular with NASA who use it as an astronaut trainer and chase-plane. Vintage United States Air Force aviation memorabilia lot consisting of a pair of pilot wings and six original color photographs depicting a pilot and T-38 Talon training aircraft. The wing badge measures approximately 3 1/4 inches wide and displays the classic U. Pilot wing design with center shield. The badge appears to be sterling silver construction based on appearance and weight, although no sterling mark was found during inspection. Included are six original color photographs measuring approximately 3 1/2 inches square. Portrait of a pilot in flight gear holding flight helmet. Multiple air-to-air views of Northrop T-38 Talon aircraft. Airfield and runway views. Additional aviation-related training photographs. One pilot wing badge (3 1/4). Six original color photographs (approximately 3 1/2 square). This is an attractive aviation grouping that combines original pilot insignia with period personal photographs, making it appealing to military aviation collectors, Air Force historians, veteran memorabilia collectors, and display enthusiasts. A scarce opportunity to acquire an original pilot-related lot featuring both insignia and personal aviation photographs.
Hobby Master 1:72 Air Power Series HA5415 Northrop T-38C Talon Diecast Model USAF Thunderbirds, #1, 1970s. In 1974, the U. Air Force Thunderbirds transitioned to the T-38 Talon for their aerobatic performances, marking a new era in the team’s history. The change from the larger F-4 Phantom II to the lightweight, supersonic T-38 allowed for more precise maneuvers and lower operating costs. The T-38’s sleek profile and agility made it ideal for the Thunderbirds’ tight formations and complex routines. The T-38 served the team until 1982, when it was replaced by the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
