USAF TB-25J Organizational Maintenance Handbook 1957
Most are pre WWII. During WWII he was stationed on Gaum Island and was trained as an aircraft mechanic. After the war he went to work for Paul Mantz and became his head mechanic. The company was located in Burbank, CA then moved to Orange County Airport (which became John Wayne International Airport). Years later Frank Tallman joined Paul and they ran a very busy company. They supplied vintage planes for many movies and documentaries. In 1965 Paul was killed in a plane crash during the making of “Flight of the Phoenix”. A few years Frank opened “Movieland of the Air” and continued to supply planes to the movie industry. Soon after, my father retired with 42 years of service to the company. So, to make a long story short, I need to sell everything. There is a wealth of information in this collection. I cannot guarantee that everything is complete due to the fact that they were used to maintain and build vintage planes. My photos will show all of the defects I see. I will do my best to make it right. All pages checked, and the book is complete.

AND YES WE ARE STILL ONE NATION UNDER GOD! HISTORY OF THE CHALLENGE COIN. During World War I, American volunteers from all parts of the country filled the newly formed flying squadrons. Some were wealthy scions attending colleges such as Yale and Harvard who quit in mid-term to join the war. In one squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck in solid bronze carrying the squadron emblem for every member of his squadron. He himself carried his medallion in a small leather pouch around his neck. Shortly after acquiring the medallions, the pilot’s aircraft was severely damaged by ground fire. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and was immediately captured by a German patrol. In order to discourage his escape, the Germans took all of his personal identification except for the small leather pouch around his neck. In the meantime, he was taken to a small French town near the front. Taking advantage of a bombardment that night, he escaped. However, he was without personal identification. He succeeded in avoiding German patrols and reached the front lines. With great difficulty, he crossed no-man’s land. Eventually, he stumbled onto a French outpost. Unfortunately, saboteurs had plagued the French in this sector. They sometimes masqueraded as civilians and wore civilian clothes. Not recognizing the young pilot’s American accent, the French thought him a saboteur and made ready to execute him. Just in time, he remembered his leather pouch containing the medallion. He showed the medallion to his would-be executioners. His French captors recognized the squadron insignia on the medallion and delayed long enough for him to confirm his identity. Instead of shooting him, they gave him a bottle of wine. Back at his squadron, it became a tradition to ensure that all members carried their medallion or coin at all times. This was accomplished through a challenge in the following manner: a challenger would ask to see the coin. If the challenged member produced his coin, the challenging member was required to pay for the drink. This tradition continued throughout the war and for many years after while surviving members of the squadron were still alive. The fighting men and women of the 48th Intelligence Squadron proudly continue this tradition. Some Organizations even have regulations regarding Military Coins. Here is an example. A’Coin Check’ consists of a challenge and a response. The challenge is initiated by drawing your coin, holding it in the air by whatever means possible and state, scream, shout or otherwise verbally acknowledge that you are initiating a coin check. Another, but less vocal method is to firmly place it on the bar, table, Or floor (this should produce an audible noise which can be easily heard by those being challenged, but try not to leave a permanent imprint). If you accidentally drop your coin and it makes an audible sound upon impact, then you have just “accidentally” initiated a coin check. This is called paying the price for improper care of your coin. The response consists of all those persons being challenged drawing their coin in a like manner (other organizational coins are invalid). You must produce a coin with YOUR UNIT’S LOGO on it. Coin checks are permitted, ANY TIME, ANY PLACE’. Keep OPSEC in mind, be smart! There are no exceptions to the rules. They apply to those clothed or unclothed. At the time of the challenge, you are permitted one-step and an arms reach to locate your coin. If you still cannot reach it — SORRY ABOUT THAT! A Coin is a coin. Coins attached on belt buckles are considered belt buckles. ” Coins on key chains are considered “key chains. ” Coins placed in a “holder/clasp and worn around the neck like a necklace are valid and are considered a coin. One of Those Stories For The Ages…. It goes without saying but we’ll do it anyway…. World War II was the bloodiest conflict in the world, sending the most amount of soldiers to a fight which ended with the greatest civilian & military casualties ever recorded. That’s saying a lot. There are a myraid of books written about this horrendous time in history. There were probably hundreds of thousands of acts of heroism that we’ll never hear about & maybe even more miracles that went unnoticed…. We are glad to say that we found one of those stories that include both! Head A studious man, he graduated from pilot training in just five months & was sent to Burma, flying a B-24 Liberator. What happened the following year is one of those stories we just described! On March 31st, 1943, Baggett & his squadron were sent on a mission to destroy a bridge of strategic importance. On their way, the B-24s were intercepted by Japanese Zeros which hit the squadron hard. Baggett’s plane was riddled with bullets to such an extent that the crew was forced to bail out. While parachuting, a Japanese pilot decided that downing the plane wasn’t enough. He circled around & started shooting at the bailed out pilots, killing two of the crew….. Seeing this, Baggett did the only think he could do…. Not convinced Baggett was dead, the Zero pulled up to him at near stall speed, the pilot opening his canopy to check on his horrendous work….. Not wasting any time & think on his feet (no pun intended), Baggett pulled out his pistol & shot the pilot right in the head! This is considered the best shot by a Caliber. 45 M911 pistol of ALL TIME! The last thing he saw was the Zero spiraling toward earth. When he landed, he & the other bailed out crew members were captured & sent to a POW camp where they remained till the end of the war. They were liberated by OSS agents (WW II version of the modern CIA) & Baggett was recognized as the only person during the War to shoot down a Zero with a pistol….
